Why Use an Attorney?
There are several options for veterans seeking VA disability benefits. Veterans can choose to work the case on their own. They could use a service organization or a state agency. All of these options are viable options and most of them are free. If there are free options then why use an attorney who charges a fee? There are three main reasons why you should always use an attorney in your VA disability case. Granted, we are lawyers and this is self-serving, but after representing veterans for over 13 years, we have seen the good, the bad and the ugly of VA cases. That is why we are confident in saying that veterans should always (ok…usually) use an attorney to assist them with their VA disability claims.
Reason #1: We think differently. Have you heard the old saying… “you don’t know what you don’t know?” Well that is very true when it comes to using an attorney. While service organizations, state agencies and other veterans can give you some good general information they are not legally trained. The purpose of law school is to help attorneys think differently. It is a very analytical way of thinking. This analytical mindset helps us see “where the puck is going.” Instead of just seeing the case and where it stands now, we see where the case could go.
Reason #2: We handle the cases differently. Because of Reason #1 (our ability to think differently), we work the case differently. We don’t simply tell veterans “You need to get medical evidence.” We prepare you to work with your doctor or an expert witness to create the evidence that is necessary. Our experience sees many veterans frustrated by the fact that when they use service organizations the organization simply tells the veteran to gather their records. That isn’t giving help. That is having the veteran do the work. While it is important for the veteran to take action on their own behalf, we, as attorneys, do not leave the “heavy lifting” to the veteran. Isn’t that why you need help in the first place?
Reason #3: We get you more money. Because of Reason #1 and #2, we work towards getting you rated as high as possible. This means that instead of just looking at your current PTSD condition rated at 30% and trying to get you to 50%, we are working to see how we can get you 100%. This means more money in your pocket. We have seen a great disservice to many veterans who are simply left to fend for themselves in trying to get service connected or a higher rating. We start the case with an eye towards 100%.
