Ways to Establish Service Connection
When a military service veteran files a claim for disability compensation with the VA for an illness or disability that resulted from military service, one of the first things a veteran has to establish is that the current illness or disability is connected to the veteran’s military service. There are several ways to consider when trying to establish service connection. This is not an exhaustive list but a discussion of the three most common ways of proving service connection. Of course, establishing service connection requires reliance on strong medical evidence.
How to Establish a Service Connection
Direct Service Connection: This is usually the easiest method to use. Direct service connection usually arises when you are claiming a current disability and there is evidence in the service treatment records of the veteran showing that the current disability was caused or arose during the veteran’s time in service.
Presumed Service Connection: Certain disabilities are presumed to be caused by events or injuries in service if specific requirements are met. For example, exposure to Agent Orange is presumed if a veteran was boots on the ground in Vietnam during a certain time period. If the veteran meets this criteria then there is a list of disabilities that will be presumed caused by the agent orange exposure.
Secondary Service Connection: This occurs when an already service connected disability causes another condition or disability. For example if a veteran has a back condition then the veteran may also file a claim for neuropathy that is caused by the back condition. The original condition causes another condition and the veteran can receive benefits as a result.
