What is a New Claim
A new claim is exactly what the name implies…it is a claim that is being raised for the first time. The reason it’s important to recognize a new claim is because there are certain rules associated with the new claim process. One such aspect is the fully developed claim process. The Fully Developed Claims (FDC) program is an optional initiative that offers Veterans and survivors faster decisions from VA on compensation, pension, and survivor benefit claims.
When one files a new claim there is little in way of evidence that is required or needed. Of course, you should submit whatever evidence you have, but the VA has a duty to assist in developing your claim and will notify you of information needed. Moreover, after filing a new claim and you obtain the decision then you have a choice to appeal or not appeal. The new claim process is the very beginning of the VA disability process.
