Caregivers Under the VA System

A family caregiver plays an important role in caring for the Veteran at home and in the community. VA has two programs for caregivers: The Program of General Caregiver Support Services (eligible Veterans all eras) and the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (eligible post-9/11 Veterans). To learn about these programs visit this link: https://www.caregiver.va.gov. As a Caregiver, the very best thing you can do for those who depend on you is to take care of yourself. Caregivers of Veterans are eligible to participate in the VA Caregiver Peer Support Mentoring Program, both as Mentors and as Mentees. Mentors and Mentees communicate using email, telephone, and letter writing depending on what works best for both of them. Mentors receive training before being paired with another Caregiver and are volunteers with their local VA medical center Voluntary Services Department. Caregivers participating in the Caregiver Peer Support Mentoring Program agree to participate for 6 months, but many participate for much longer.
